Lou Loeber, Art for everyone

Stedelijk Museum Schiedam presenteert voor het eerst sinds 33 jaar een museale solotentoonstelling van het werk van Lou Loeber (1894-1983). De tentoonstelling is ook de aftrap van een programma over abstract werkende vrouwelijke kunstenaars uit de jaren zeventig, voor wie Lou Loeber een belangrijke inspiratiebron is.
Haar onderwerpen – interieurs, landschappen, stillevens en portretten – gebruikt ze om te experimenteren met kleur, vorm en compositie. 
Ze zoekt steeds naar harmonie, waarmee ze hoopt bij te dragen aan een evenwichtigere, socialere wereld.

Stedelijk Museum Schiedam presents a solo exhibition by Lou Loeber (1894 -1983), contemporary of Piet Mondrian and Theo van Doesburg.  The exhibition marks the launch of a programme about women artists from the 1970s who worked in an abstract style and to whom Loeber was an important source of inspiration. She used her designs – interiors, landscapes, still lifes, and portraits – to experiment with colour, form, and composition. She was constantly searching for harmony between abstraction and figuration

Maria Roosen

Stedelijk Museum Schiedam bracht in 2026 een eerbetoon aan kunstenaar Maria Roosen en haar oeuvre dat meer dan veertig jaar beslaat. Haar werk gaat over het leven en zijn vergankelijkheid.

“Mijn werk gaat altijd over de verbeelding van hoe ik dingen heb waargenomen of gebeurtenissen die ik wil verbeelden. Daar zoek ik het enige juiste materiaal voor, soms in aquarel, dan glas, hout of textiel.” 

 

It is impossible to imagine the Dutch artworld without Maria Roosen. Her work explores themes of growth, blossoming, fertility, love, and transience and is frequently shown during group exhibitions focusing on the female perspective.

Maria Roosen: “In the beginning of my art practice it was absolutely not done for artists to say that their work had evolved from their intuition. It was dismissed as art for women. The fact that today there is more space and acceptance for this is wonderful, but at the same time also a dire necessity.”

Yayoi Kusama

 Het Stedelijk Museum Schiedam presenteert een tentoonstelling gewijd aan de Nederlandse jaren van de Japanse kunstenaar Yayoi Kusama. Het werk uit de vroege jaren van Kusama [Yayoi Kusama. De Nederlandse jaren 1965-1970] schetst een verrassend beeld van een zelfbewuste jonge Kusama, die in het Nederland van provo, happenings en jeugdcultuur de basis legt voor haar wereldveroverende artistieke oeuvre.

The Stedelijk Museum Schiedam NL presents an exhibition dedicated to the Dutch years of Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. On display are the works she made during the various periods in which she lived and worked in the Netherlands. The exhibition Yayoi Kusama. The Dutch Years 1965-1970 paints a surprising new picture of a self-aware young Kusama, who laid the foundations for her world-conquering artistic oeuvre in a version of the Netherlands characterised by its Provo counterculture movement, happenings and youth culture.

Twee maanden op Curaçao

Stedelijk Museum Schiedam toont een overzicht van het werk van de Nederlandse kunstenaar Frieda Hunziker (1908-1966). Speciale aandacht in de tentoonstelling Frieda Hunziker. Een vlucht naar Curaçao gaat uit naar de reis naar Curaçao die Hunziker in 1951 maakt. Daar ligt volop inspiratie voor haar geabstraheerde figuratieve schilderijen uit de jaren kort na de oorlog en voor  voor vrijer kleurrijk werk.
De tentoonstelling wordt gecombineerd met het perspectief van kunstenaars met wortels op Curaçao die met hun blik naar het eiland kijken.

Two months in Curaçao
Stedelijk Museum Schiedam presents a retrospective of the Dutch artist Frieda Hunziker (1908-1966).
The exhibition Frieda Hunziker. A Flight to Curaçao tells the story of Hunziker’s trip to the island in 1951. There, she found much inspiration; her abstract figurative paintings that dominated the war years gave way to freer, more colourful works. The exhibition combines Frieda Hunziker’s gaze, a visitor to the island, with that of artists with roots in Curaçao: observing the island from an insider’s perspective.

Tentoonstelling van Stedelijk Museum Schiedam in de Glasfabriek.

Ruim twintig jaar geleden trokken ze er ‘s nachts met een spuitbus op uit om werk achter te laten op muren, deuren en andere plekken, meestal aan de rafelranden van de stad. Inmiddels werken ze als beeldend kunstenaar. Op verzoek van het Stedelijk Museum Schiedam stelde ontwerpersduo Opperclaes voor het eerst in Nederland een tentoonstelling samen met werk van deze kunstenaars. Ongeveer dertig makers uit binnen- en buitenland exposeren in verschillende loodsen en maken hun werk veelal ter plekke.

Artists with roots in graffiti culture are given a unique platform on the grounds of the Glasfabriek, the former glass factory in Schiedam. Over 20 years ago, these artists would go out at night with a spray can, leaving their work behind on walls, doors and other places on the frayed edges of the city. Their practice developed as visual artists, as shown in this exhibition curated by design duo Opperclaes, commissioned by the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam. Around 30 national and international makers exhibit in various warehouse spaces to produce their work on site.
